Why don't fighter planes have guns that fire backwards?

Image
WW2 Aircraft having gun to fire backwards Guns on today's fighter aircraft are not for dog-fights.  They are there for ground attack where CAS (Close Air Support) are needed.  Today's jets are simply too fast and maneuverable to be good gunnery targets in a close in dog fight, assuming the shooter didn't take out the target with a missile at 20 miles. So supposing you did have someone on your tail and you DID have a rear firing gun.  What then?  Think of reversing your car at high speed and trying to keep the road centered in your mirror.  The slightest twitch of your jet would send any bullets off target, and twisting/turning is the best dog fight defense you can have in a gunnery dog fight.  You would need a turreted gun with tracking radar and perhaps a second crew to man it.  Too heavy a penalty for a very rare usage.  In short, rear facing guns are simply impracticable on today's fighter jets. ANOTHER REASON: It is not that...

Cost Of AK-47 for Indian Army???

The Rashtriya Rifles(RR), an army formation that fights insurgency in J&K since 90's, has two crossed AK-47s as its unit insignia. Despite the induction of the indigenous INSAS assualt rifle during the Kargil war in late 90's , Indian army   continued to  equip its soilders  posted in militancy affected areas  with the AK's. Today also India continues to be one of the world's largest importers of Rifles including AK-type rifles. However these  weapons(AK's) aren't from Kalashnikov factories in Russia but they are manufactured from Bulgaria. The Home Ministry till 2011, has bought over 100,000 Bulgarian-made  AK's  to equip its police and para military units. A Bulgarian manufactured AK-47 having its distinctive black plastic finish cost just Rs 22,000 in 2011.  This is significantly way cheaper than the Russian manufactured AK variant made in Izhmash factory and Rs 5000 less than even the  indigenous   IN SAS as...

What is the difference between Fighter,Attack And Strike Aircraft???

Fighter aircraft Fighter aircraft  are sometimes  air superiority  aircraft or mainly  multi-role  aircraft nowadays.  These aircraft are primarily designed to overpower and outmaneuver enemy aircraft to obtain and maintain airspace control. These aircraft typically have more powerful, sophisticated radars allowing them to detect enemy aircraft earlier, and launch counter mesures such as air-to-air missiles on them.  They are mostly lightweight but having powerful engines, giving them a very high thrust-to-weight ratio and an abundance of power. Lastly, they  have bubble canopies affording excellent visibility in many directions. The most typical modern example of this is the Su-30 MKI And Rafale of Indian Air-force.                                 ...

Why did Andaman and Nicobar islands became part of India although they are much closer to Malaysia, Thailand, Sumatra and Myanmar?

Today, Andaman & Nicobar is seen as a tourist island but very few know that this was the first Indian place to attain freedom from the clutches of British. Yes, the first part of Indian land to be liberated was Andaman & Nicobar Island.Located 1200 kms from the Indian mainland, approx 500 kms from Myanmar and 90 kms from Indonesia, the Andaman and Nicobar consists of mini 572 islands.Andaman and Nicobar islands are approximately 8,249 square km in size and houses India’s only Tri-Service Theatre Command of the Indian Armed Forces. Its valuable position, from the straits of Malacca, and the presence of the Indian Armed forces in the region, is one of the reasons for China’s infamous Malacca Dilemma and perhaps the mother of the OBOR(One Belt One Road) and the China Pakistan Economic Corridor. But DO YOU KNOW? IRONICALLY, these Islands were the first one to be liberated by nn Indian Freedom Fighter. This Freedom fighter was none other than   Netaji Subhash Chandra B...
